Júlia Laurência

HANDS OF A FAIRY

Born in Várzeas da Goldra, close to Fonte da Goldra, in the municipality of Loulé in the first days of 1955, Júlia Laurência started sewing when she was as young as 10. She learnt her craft from a talented seamstress, who taught her the secrets of the art of sewing. Later, she took a ‘Singer’ course, where many girls learnt to embroider and sew with a machine. “There was a great sense of camaraderie,” she recalls. Her drive and inventive character soon made her leap from merely perfecting her art through repetition, into the fantasy world of endless possibilities of creating and recreating with a piece of cloth and some thread. But the passion to which she returns as often as she can is dresses for dolls and for brides. Creations that allow her fairy hands to delve into a world of fantasy.
